This is the first review of reviews to synthesise evidence on interventions to improve college and university students’ mental health and wellbeing. Conley et al. conducted a meta-analytic review of evidence on the impact of universal and indicated technology-delivered interventions (TDIs) targeting mental health outcomes in 4763 higher education students, including randomized and quasi-experimental study designs (rated as moderate methodological quality). Harrer et al. systematically reviewed and performed a meta-analysis of evidence (rated as higher methodological quality) on the impacts of internet interventions on symptoms of common mental health problems, wellbeing and functional outcomes among university students.
Mapping the multidimensional factors of medical student resilience development: A scoping review
As with student-athletes and graduate students, students in most health care professions operate in a highly competitive environment with demanding expectations on performance and hours dedicated to developing practice. Substance use by medical students and trainees has also been documented at higher rates; data showed that 91.3 Addressing campus substance misuse together percent and 26.2 percent of medical students consumed alcohol and used marijuana, respectively, and that additional studies on patterns of substance use are needed to prevent substance use disorders among medical students (Ayala et al., 2017). Graduate students who perceive their mentors as effective are more likely to persist in academic decisions and publish research than students who are not mentored (NASEM, 2019b). Undergraduate students who participate in mentored research experiences are more likely to stay in STEMM, and students who perceive their mentors as effective are more likely to pursue doctoral programs in related fields.

And that mainly comes in the form of peer support … that has often helped me – the seniors in my residence, who have helped me through a lot of this stuff. “… especially for departmental modules, we need like…, for example…, tutors; at other universities, they have lecturers and also tutors; they are having extra classes and all that…” (Participant 10, Year Level 3, University 2). “I think it’s not easy to tell people directly involved with our academics, our personal challenges” (Participant 14, Year Level 2, University 2). “And I think that’s the frustrating problem that I experienced here at campus, that because we don’t have many options, it kind of… like hinders you from getting the help that you need with urgency.” (Participant 12, Year Level 4, University 2). “So, there are times whereby you go for a scheduled appointment, and they are also just not on campus… and you are constantly having to reschedule meetings.” (Participant 10, Year Level 3, University 2).

- By adopting these strategies, higher education professionals can create a thriving culture of well-being that benefits everyone at the institution.
- In their 2013 review (graded as lower methodological quality), Conley et al. explored whether skill-oriented interventions that included supervised skills were more effective than psychoeducational programmes.

They found that mindfulness interventions reduced depression, anxiety, stress, and negative mood. When compared with active control groups, MBIs significantly reduced distress (SMD -0.37, 95% CI -0.56 to -0.18) and state anxiety (MD -5.95, 95% CI -9.49 to -2.41), but not depression (SMD -0.19, 95% CI -0.43 to 0.05) and wellbeing (SMD -0.08, 95% CI -0.43 to 0.27). Regehr and colleagues found that mindfulness-based interventions focussing on stress reduction significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression. They found that there was no significant difference in effects, for depressive symptoms, anxiety and stress, between brief and longer interventions. Both universal and indicated interventions aimed at improving mental health were included.

These findings are supported by Atalay et al. and Alyahyan and Düştegör in the sense that students in health sciences experience overwhelming academic stress due to high academic demands, pressure to succeed, high workloads and financial burdens. Support approaches related to adjustment to university life, especially for first-year students, were recommended as an important service to prepare them for academic life and studying for a university degree. Food security and access to opportunities for supporting physical and mental health were identified as important enablers conducive to positive learning, alleviating stress and promoting academic success. This theme deals with a combination of factors that pose difficulties for students to access support services at the university. This theme focuses on students’ experiences related to factors prompting the need to seek support from wellness support services offered by the two universities. University 1, situated in an urban area, provides comprehensive services, including but not limited to student health and wellness services, psychological and emotional support services, disability services, as well as academic and career support.
